IG engagement rate calculator
Enter followers plus the likes and comments a normal post gets, or fetch a public account, and see your Instagram engagement rate with an honest reading of what it means.
How the IG engagement rate is worked out
The formula here is the usual public one: average interactions per post (likes and comments, with saves and shares when known) over followers, times 100. Using an average of your last nine to twelve posts gives a fairer figure than any single post. If you use the look-up box, we fetch the public numbers from recent posts for you.
What counts as a good engagement rate in the UK
There is no official benchmark, but across ordinary accounts a few patterns hold. Smaller accounts tend to have higher rates, because their followers are more likely to be friends, customers or a tight niche. As accounts grow, rates fall. Very roughly:
| Followers | Usual spread |
|---|---|
| Under 5,000 | 3% to 8% |
| 5,000 to 50,000 | 1.5% to 4% |
| 50,000+ | 0.8% to 2.5% |
Why engagement matters more than followers
Brands and the Instagram algorithm both pay attention to engagement. A creator with 8,000 followers and 5% engagement often earns more from sponsored posts than one with 30,000 and 0.5%. Our sponsored post calculator shows how that plays out in pounds.
How bought followers affect the figure
Bought followers raise the follower count without adding interactions, so they lower your engagement rate. That is not a reason to panic about a modest pack, but it is why we suggest keeping follower packs in proportion and, where the rate is already low, considering likes on your recent posts instead. You can check the balance quickly with the like-to-follower ratio checker.
Ways to raise your rate
- Post fewer, better posts rather than many average ones.
- Ask a question in captions that people actually want to answer.
- Reply to comments in the first hour.
- Use Reels for reach and carousels for saves.
